Lake Mary, FL – December 23, 2011 – Progressive Communications International (PCI) held a company holiday food drive to benefit the Families in Transition (FIT) Program for Seminole County Schools. The program was featured on a recent 60 Minutes episode documenting the plight of homeless schoolchildren in Central Florida. Employees brought donations of non-perishable food and cash over a two-week period to be presented to FIT coordinator Beth Davalos, who appeared in the 60 Minutes episode with some of the families in her program.

Davalos was presented with a check for $800 and several large collection boxes of food during PCI’s annual Holiday Luncheon on December 21. Speaking to the company after a video clip of the 60 Minutes episode was played, Davalos gave an update on the children and parents who touched the hearts of viewers, and inspired PCI to choose FIT as a way of giving back to the community during this holiday season. But although a few opportunities had come about as a result of the episode, she noted that the families profiled still face an uncertain future – as do the many other local families in similar circumstances.

“The homeless are hiding in plain sight,” said Davalos. “The children go to school every day, like all the other students. But no one sees where they go after.”

FIT has served more than 8,500 homeless students since 2003, and has helped 1,200 Seminole County students during this school year.

“The 60 Minutes episode gave us the opportunity to learn about the great work this organization does in our own community,” said Gabe Hernandez, PCI General Manager. “This is all about helping our neighbors who are struggling in this tough economy, and doing what we can to support FIT in its efforts to get these families back on their feet.”
